I have a photo of my father with a large trout that he caught fishing in Lough Corrib while on holiday in Ireland in about 1936 or 37. He is wearing plus fours with a shirt, TIE, pullover and a jacket. On his feet he has gym shoes.

The picture was probably taken soon after he landed the fish as there is a boat in the picture and the fish was sent to Dublin to be stuffed (shades of the World's Whopper), so it is unlikely that he dressed up to take the picture.

Dress was much more formal in the 1930s, this was the era when a gentlemen supposedly dressed for dinner even when dining alone in the African jungle, though I agree wearing a tie while camping does seem unlikely to us.
