I don't have my AR books handy: like the rest of my library they are languishing in boxes during very protracted house rebuilding. However, it is in SD I believe that Mrs Blackett is cracking under the relentless criticism of the GA regarding the Amazons. Captain Flint comforts his sister by saying "Bob would have liked them that way" (or "the way they are"). The tense of the verb clearly indicates that Mrs B is a widow.
