Bob Blackett

A thought. Nancy would have been born around 1917, and Peggy around 1918.
I get the strong sense that their rather special relationship with their
mother is one that has evolved over a number of years in the absence of
their father. As a result, I find myself making the assumption (which I
am sure would have been shared by many of Ransome's readers when the
books first appeared) that Bob Blackett was killed in the Great War or
died in the influenza epidemic at the end of it. What is striking about
the scene at the summit of Kanchenjunga is that the Swallows show
'typical' English restraint by not asking for any further details:
even the tactless Roger remains silent, and Titty is the one who changes
the subject.
