The logic of reading AR's books in chronological order is indisputable, but many of us did not have the choice, either because parents did not know enough about the books, or (in my case, showing my age) not all the books were available in the years after the 1939-45 war. I was given PM first, which is full of backward cross-references. While these were puzzling, it did heighten a sense of mystery, and also the impression that these were real children with a past which they talked about and which you did not know about, as happened in real life when you met a group of children on holiday together. The result was that I was all the more eager to find out what did happen on High Topps and on Wild Cat Island, and I pestered my parents to give me all the books, which they did (but still out of order). Even after this jumble I reckon I am as keen an AR fan as anyone else, although whether it had any effect on my sanity I'll leave others to judge.
