The topography of the Walton Backwaters changed as a result of the 1953 East Coast floods. The dykes were breached in many places. In some places they were repaired on their old alignment. In other places they were rebuilt on a new alignment, and in others they were not rebuilt at all. In general, there was rather more dry land than there is today.

If you want to create a map that gives an accurate basis to the cartographic adventures in SW then an O.S. map, or even better an Admiralty Chart, showing the area as it was when Ransome himself sailed in Hamford Water would be a much better place to start.
