On the general 'charity' issue, what is wrong with 'letting a group of enthusiasts for an author save some money' (as Mike puts it)?
There are groups of enthusiasts for all sorts of things who are registered as charities in the UK. The money otherwise goes to the Government in tax - is that what Mike and Prue would prefer?
