I have never been happy about the 'war wound' theory. The wound would have to have been inflicted in the closing days of the war, and have been insuffiently severe to allow Bob Blackett to leave hospital and resume normal domestic life for about two years. Then, presumably, after the birth of Peggy, some sort of secondary infection flared up. The 'flu epidemic seems a more likely cause.

However, I don't feel that we should flounder about trying to guess at the cause of death. We are given no clues, and therefore it is futile to guess. If he did die, then he just died. How and why, we don't know.

I have tried to base everything in my thesis on actual clues in the text, although I admit some of them are a bit tenuous.
