These similarities may be due to the fact that there are only so many basic traits in human nature, and among a group of four characters it is natural to divvy them up in certain ways - at least, natural for a group of writers sharing similar upbringings/education/culture. (Personalities get divvied up a little differently in, say, folk stories from China or Africa.)
