The Captain Pugwash cartoon started in the Eagle comic about fifty years ago. Its author was John Ryan, who taught art at my school. He gave us a fascinating talk once about how he drew comic strips. He also did Lettice Leefe at that time (in the Girl comic? – I forget the name of Eagle's stable-mate) and also more adult strips for Lilliput. I do remember he showed us an example of one about the home life of the Borgias. Very exciting for us, since the school considered Lilliput rather too racy for us pupils.
The BBC cartoons came many years later.
