I received eleven of the twelve books as a child as presents, and like most children never gave a thought to the importance of dust jackets. So over the years they got lost or destroyed.
Now I am still on the lookout for second-hand ones just to get the DJ and if I ever see a 1st edition I can afford... Anyway, I was looking on e-bay the other day and was amazed a what people will sell:-
A 1st of WH that was described as excellent but without DJ!
An edition of S&A with the original illustrations, but some coloured in!
Most odd was a couple of people selling Puffin pb editons with creased covers etc. for 60p (a $1 or less).
My real question is, does anyone know where you can track down DJs or is it one of things that if they do know they are not going to tell you? (or am I just taking things a bit too far!)
