For Peter Duck AR used The Cruise of the Alerte as a source; by EF Knight one of his favorite authors, and about a cruise to the island of Trinidade off Brazil so it is not actually in the Caribbean. He wrote an introduction for the book when Rupert Hart-Davis reprinted the book in the Mariner’s Library (No 21) in 1952. I think that AR started PD after SA but finished SA instead, so that PD was the third book in the series by which time he was a recognised children’s (Christmas?) author, although it was after PD that he became confident of making a living by writing. PS: Lost or sunk gold is still being found; though by diving expeditions rather than by a party equipped with children’s beach spades!
