Capt Flint is old enough to be almost completely bald. In illustrations in 'Peter Duck' and 'Swallowdale' I see he has a small fringe of hair at the back, but it is certainly a late stage of balding, not early.
Capt Flint also needs to be old enough to have travelled sufficiently that he is now happy to live a quiet life, writing aboard a houseboat...though I suppose he does still dash off in search of copper later, so the wanderlust has not left him entirely.
Could be anywhere between 40 and 55 based on that. But we do need to keep him within 10 or 12 years of Mrs Blackett (unless she had children late?).
AR was around 46 when he wrote S&A, so maybe that's the best number to settle on?!?!
