Arthur Ransome went to Rugby, so he would probably have referred to the 15-a-side game as football. I always thought John went to Rugby as well, but where did Dick go? Somewhere North of London, because at the beginning of Picts he joins Dorothea at Crewe. As a Professor's son, I would have expected him to go to Westminster or St. Paul's, but obviously not. Assuming Dorothea went to boarding school (and for the pot of WH to work all the SADs must have gone to boarding school) I would guess Wycombe Abbey.

Interestingly, Miss Lee went to Great Marlow. This is the location of another fictional school, Marlowe Grange, in Angela Brazil's novel “The Madcap of the School”, the sort of school (twenty years earlier) that the Amazons (and the Farland twins) might have gone to.

Some time ago someone suggested that Tom Dudgeon went to a day school. I doubt it; how about Gresham's (in Holt, North Norfolk), Framlingham (Suffolk) or Oundle (Leicestershire)?
