We know Susan's mother expected her to make sure that everything got to the end of a journey safely (SD)

Presumably everybody equally expected her in particular to make sure that everything arrived safely at the Camp in Secret Water. Everything did - except her alarm clock. The clock was aboard Goblin, but Susan herself was ashore, not able to check that everything was put into the boat and taken ashore, and the clock was evidently overlooked. As Andrew says Commander Walker was pushing everybody to hurry and Susan didn't go back on board to double check that everything was ashore.

These things do happen. Important items get overlooked and not necessarily through very great incompetence.

As it happens, today I drove the 30 miles to Norwich for work to be done on the car, and when I got there found that I hadn't brought any money. Pobody's Nerfect.
