I don't think that John was trying to drown you. I think he just wanted to teach you to sail so that you could enjoy all the sailing related posts on Tarboard.
Why am I so sure? Because, I was going to make a similar suggestion myself during the "Swallow anew" debate. (Only without the capsize.) Fearing your wrath, I DIDN'T HAVE THE COURAGE TO DO SO!
Being professionally involved in the risk business, John would have provided a life jacket.
