Yes, and I thank you, Peter R, but I fear you have mistaken my standpoint on dowsing. I have no doubt whatever that it works - the evidence is overwhelming. What I am asking is - how does it work? The website to which you directed me is that of the British Society of Dowsers, and if you wanted to hire a dowser, that is where you would go. However, they don't explain the science behind it - they probably don't feel there is any need. I feel there is a need, and I am not alone . . .

Dick was holding the hazel twig, looking at the cut ends of the fork. 'I don't see why it should,' he was saying. 'There's nothing to make it twist. It can't have really. She must have just thought it did.'

Is Dick right? And when the rods dip, do they move themselves, or does the dowser's hands twitch, causing the rods to dip?

'The twig was moving again. Again it stopped. Again it twitched in her fingers.

Note: the twig moved.
