I am not sure that in those days he would have needed a wallet (and a small fortune!) to buy a gallon of petrol.
I think that in the mid 1930's a UK gallon of petrol cost 1/6d (7.5p in more recent currency).
Also if he carried identification they would have not marked on his hospital report card "unknown seaman - speaks English"!
I do like the idea of him ending up as Chairman of Lloyds, good thinking to have put him in a private room!
