B*ll*cks!

moderate your language

"Christmas" is a muddled mish mash of various vaguely symbolic mythic flummery patched onto a pre-existing mid winter festival. It was imported into this country as part of a franchised cult and has been dressed up since with a wide variety of borrowed gimcrackery.

Christmas is now the almost universally accepted UK term for the period from mid-Dec to end of the year

A period previously known as Yule, before this "Christmas" thing was foisted on the country. Its existance now, as you point out, is a commercial ploy alongside the development of other marketing periods.

A council has no need to celebrate a specific religions festival. Its actions did nothing to prevent anyone celebrating Christmas. Full marks to them for trying for a more civil and civic solution.

What about 'Freezihols'?

'Winter Holiday' works fine for me.
