This is a problem that vexes those of us who are born Americans, but understand that groups of people function better when everyone obeys basic rules of safety, courteousness and common sense. We wonder why so many Americans (and I'm sure there are plenty of these folks in other countries, too) seem to believe that it is their right to endanger others. That behavior seems to go along with rude & selfish behavior, and is often accompanied with a "why me?" attitude when the behavior brings criticism. It is my belief that we Americans put too much emphasis on our coming to America to find "freedom" when we teach our history. More and more Americans think they have the right to act as they wish in any matter--not at all the original idea of the founding fathers--read all the rules that were included in the Constitution! BTW--This issue is a part of AR's world--the Swallows, obedient above all, are somewhat appalled at some of the behavior of the Amazons, such as "stealing" the leather purse for door hinges in PP.
AR sets his readers up to consider which is the right path for each of us--what do we condone, and in what circumstances?
