been a motor car petrol (gasoline) engine adapted for marine use.

Motor car engines are designed to run much faster than their marine
counterparts and although a step down gear train is certainly possible
I supect that such an engine would go "brrrrr" rather than "chug chug".

I think it much more likely that the Beckfoot launch had something likethis. I subscribe to the view the original model of the Beckfoot launch was
Daffodil once steam driven, but later converted to petrol.
