With the tennis thing - wasn't it generally a social sport then? Membership of a tennis club seemed to be a tad upper crust when so many were scraping the poverty barrel to its core. Also maybe more for a family with older teens? The Blacketts, mother and daughters, had other interests, (and sports with the latter) and social climbing certainly didn't feature for any of them as far as I can tell.
