There is one other instance of addressing the reader impersonally outside of the story, that occurs in The Big Six. When the D&Gs move their boat to the Wilderness at the beginning of chapter 14, AR adds a note. "There have been changes in the last few years along the bank of the river above the Ferry, and one or two neat bungalows have been built on what was once the Wilderness...."
Everything else in that opening paragraph is in the past tense - 'was' instead of 'is'. So the story is taking place in the past from this point of view. Are there are any other instances where AR was not writing in the 'present'.
