Re Ransome's working-class characters and the use of certain words

Re AR’s working-class characters, can we add the Mastadon to AR’s working-class characters? They are the Death & Glories in CC/BS and Red-Haired Bill in PD, plus Jacky Warriner at the Lake (though he is not part of the group). AR has Pete use the N-word in BS31: “Geewhizz ……”, so is the term only used by his working-class characters? Does Red-Haired Bill use it in PD; Captain Flint may use it when talking about the black pearls in The Treasure? PD is the only one I have not got (all ex-library books).

My apologies to Peter for using the word in a post with his name on it; I suppose the word was acceptable in the 1930s.
