Peter - you spoil your argument by not getting your facts right. A charitable trust such as the Rawdon Smith Trust is not "controlled at a remove by the regulations concerning charities". It can do what it likes within the terms of its trust deed. I am a trustee of two separate charities and I know this to be true. The charities regulations are there to ensure that charities don't do something improper with their money and that they are constituted properly. Otherwise they don't interfere. The charity regulations are there to protect the public, and they are admirable.

I had a suspicion that my mention of the 'Earl of Lonsdale' would set you off. Actually, there was no "public expense" - the £9,000 was donated by an Alderman. The truth is that the purchase was the bargain of the century - I wonder how many thousands or maybe millions of pounds have since been received by the Council in respect of mooring fees, boat licences, water ski-ing, passenger ferries, and other tourist facilities?
