Very true, Peter. as I know full well when trying to recall 'brats' whom I have taught. Unfortunately there are parts of the 'Ransome Story' that appear to be set in stone, for which there is no supporting written evidence — or what there is seems to refute. An example is the story that Ransome and Altounyan went together to Barrow to buy the two dinghies. Sometimes it is said that Altounyan was in such a rush that they went while the others were unpacking at Bank Ground.
In fact, the Altounyans arrived at Bank Ground on April 21st and Ernest bought the dinghies on May 6th. While the others were unpacking on April 22nd, Ernest spent the entire day on the lake with the children! The source? Dora Altounyan's journal.
