Pelton wheels -- weren't they just wonderful? Not on a par with hydraulic rams for ingenuity, of course, but lovely things all the same.

I remember having to do a fabrciation drawing of one once a few decades back, and the curves in those water-splitting buckets were the very devil to get right -- much worse than the dethridge wheels we used out here to measure irrigation-water flow.
