BUT what you are all forgetting is that whilst MAINS elec did not reach many farms etc until the mid 1960s we all had generators, be they diesel or water turbine.
So I expect Beckfoot had a Pelton Wheel run from the upper reaches of the Amazon (not much water needed but lots of fall!)
