incarnation of this thread, the subject of electricity at Beckfoot was
discussed some time ago: the latter part of last year, if I remember
correctly. The discussion then went on for a long time, with some
people reluctant to accept that the house had neither mains power nor a
domestic generator. The matter was definitively closed when somebody
(I forget who) pointed out a reference in the chapter "On Their Own"
in PM. At dusk after the Scarab's first day of sailing, as the D's are
taking her up the river Amazon to her temporary harbour, they see a
glimmer of candles or lamps from the Beckfoot drawing room.
