Hello, I'm a longtime S&A reader but a first-time user of Tarboard. Just one bit of info--my introduction to Arthur Ransome was "Secret Water" which I won as a prize in a library reading program in (gulp!) 1956. Since then, I have acquired all of the S&A books in hardback, although most are USA editions published by Lippincott or Macmillan, although I have three Capes.

Anyway, a comment about the map of The Lake (which I can download at home on MSN but not at work on Netscape--maybe I should be working at work?). I purchased hard copies of the maps in December 1999 from Mike. The one of The Lake online is superior in that it identifies the "railway station," "Longfell Wood" and "Heald Wood"; adds "Half-way Camp"; calls the lagoon "Octopus Lagoon" instead of just "lagoon"; and replaces "hut" with "igloo" as it should be labeled.

Glad to be able to join in discussions with other AR fans, although I must confess I have never been able to get through "Coot Club" or "The Big Six." If the story doesn't revolves around the Walkers and, to a lesser degree, the Blacketts, I just don't care for it as much.

From the landlocked USA Midwest, specifically Terre Haute, Indiana,
Three Million Cheers!

Jim McDowell
