A jibboom is not a boom in the sense that a mainsail has a boom on its foot. A jibboom is an extension to the bowsprit in uch the same way as a topmast extends a mainmast. It is a fixed member and lies on top of and is securely lashed to the bowsprit. Just to complicate matters a little, some American yachts have a boom attached the the foot of the jib to allow the jib to be self-tacking, the sheet being led from the end of the boom to either a point or a horse on deck. Thus, one can tack without attending to jib-sheets, a definite benefit if one is sailing short or single-handed.
