Even casual wear was much more formal in the 1930s. I have a photo of my father aged about 13 dating from the mid 1930s. He is holding a large lake trout he caught while on holiday in Ireland. He is wearing plus fours, long knee length socks and a pullover with a jacket white shirt and tie (somewhat crooked). Oh yes, and white tennis style shoes which look a bit out of place.
Beside him is the Irish boatman who is wearing what appears to be a collarless shirt with a round necked sweater over it.
