I think in the 1930's it was more likely that preparatory schools were single sexed. As their father was a serving officer in the RN, he may have received assistance from the RN for their fees.
The school fees for 4 children, plus Bridget later, would put a strain on many household budgets.
I know in the 1950/60s some of my friends with an army background had their fees paid by the army when their parents were posted abroad.
FAQ's puts Crewe as a possible meeting point and several lines converged there. Trains could stay there for many minutes if the steam engine was being changed.
(note for railway enthusiasts only - Crewe was a sub shed of the Great Western - the main shed being at Wellington.)
