I admit to surprise every time I see such a list, because I always think of AR's characters as being older than that - more like the ages listed for the final books. I suspect that is partly due to the characters being ageless, and also to my first reading them at about age 11, when they were my contemporaries. Also, Winter Holiday was the third book I read, and it was the American edition with Helene Carter's illustrations, and in one of those, they look much older. So I have never adjusted to the idea of John and Nancy being only 12 at the beginning.

Producers figuring out ages for the films did not do too well. The worst example must be Port and Starboard in the Coot Club film, who are tiny tots for some reason. No wonder the producers dropped one of the best bits of writing that AR ever did - the twins journey to catch up to the Teasel. No one would have believed those two little girls could do that.
