Peter - in my own defence, I have always thought this about Beckfoot and the lakes etc (my own attempts at a Beckfoot layout was no more than an entertaining project for myself and to have an idea of what AR had in mind from his text references and drawings.)

The other aspect, which I have mentioned before too, is that in comparison to the lakes books the East Anglian books are so accurate (yes, there are a few slip ups in chronology.) As I have lived in the lane of Witch's Quay and now on the outskirts of the Town in SW it always gives a pleasant sense of 'knowingness' when I read SW (and WDMTGTS too) that AR is describing things I regularly see.

As for bathroom, its the idea that to some this was in some way unusual or even 'posh', but I still meet people who are surprised when I tell them that in the house I grew up in during the 1950s (I was born in 1953) we had a fridge - I thought everyone did, and at the time as surprised when people said they didn't!
