I think you've got it, right there. Going by your splendid account of the interview with Philippa Ryan, AR wrote the books to make a living, but also very much for himself. And by the time of GN? he no longer felt the need to write another. He was persuaded to do so by Myles North (given the location, a nice bit of nominative determinism) but I reckon he was feeling his age (don't we all, eventually?) and the spark wasn't there. Sheer professionalism and pride made GN? happen, and maybe that's what we're feeling.
