The London Midland and Scottish Railway (1923-1947) would have conveyed the Swallows, Amazons and D's to the Lakes. Their engines and carriages weer painted crimson lake, a colour retained by British Railways for carriages until the 1960's.

Many journeys would have involved changing at Crewe, the major junction and the engineering centre for that line. Changed at Crewe a few times myself, as a boy. Crewe was hard to avoid, as immortalised in the 1900's music hall song,

"Oh, Mr Porter, what shall I do?
I meant to go to Birmingham and you've taken me on to Crewe!"

Conversely, the London and North Eastern Railway (apple green locomotives, varnished teak carriages) would have taken the D's to the Broads via Norwich Thorpe.
