Posted by Mike Dennis: All the other characters in the all the books either grew up with one or had one bought for them.

Let us consider the Walker family. They never seem to have owned a boat. They are good at borrowing/using other people's (probably with some money involved in some cases). Even the Callums become boat owners, the Walkers never do.

Swallow - owned by the Jackson and only appearing in the two "real life" stories, her appearances in Peter Duck and Missee Lee don't count.

Wild Cat and Sea Bear - only appear in the fantasy (PD and ML) or potential fantasy (Great Northern?) books so probably have no physical identity, and anyway Captain Flint is the one who is the owner/borrower.

Goblin - inadvertently "borrowed" in We didn't mean to go to sea and apparently borrowed by Commander Walker in Secret Water.

Wizard and Firefly - again borrowed by Commander Walker.
