While some editions of WH may have John referring to his chances of making the “first eleven” football ie soccer team, I thought that in the original Cape hardback edition (like the Puffin paperback edition) he refers to a “first fifteen” rugby football team, as played at the “public” ie private boarding school that he went to.
The FAQ page implies that the “first eleven” reference was in the original edition.
