Again, Ed, you are bringing up some interesting points. It's always possible that some are a case of Homer nodding....

However in fairness to Dick (and AR) I think the first couple of examples are consistant with Dick's character. Dick recognised the remains of the bore-hole and knew in principle that it was used for blasting. When he spoke to Slater Bob he wanted to know how it was done in practice and learned that the explosive was in a cartridge (rather than being poured in loose) and that Slater Bob used a fuse instead of the safer method of an electrical detonator. There would still be more for him to learn from SB e.g. the need to tamp the powder down to contain the blast and the type of explosive used. If he spoke to another miner he might ask the same question again to discover if their techniques differed.

As for tacking, the Ds were still pretty much novices and getting used to a new boat with different handling characteristics. Nervousness as much as forgetfullness may explain a heavy hand on the tiller. Are there any Tars who are going through the same learning curve?
