We didn't have electricity in the early days on the Alberta ranch, but we certainly had refrigeration - powered by kerosene aka paraffin. I believe the most common unit was called a SERVILLE, and it worked very well. The internal fuel tank wasn't large enough, so the fuel was piped in from a tank outide. The flame had to be protected from drafts and the area behind vented a bit to the outside.
