I don`t think that the worst example of this use in a child`s book has been mentioned on Tarboard. I remember being appalled at an Enid Blyton book, "Little Black Sambo", which somebody bought my children in the late 60`s/early 70`s. The story invovlved a golliwog (is this permitted in this context) which was ostracised by the other toys. Even after he had performed a brave act, I think saving another toy from drowning, he was not accepted. He went away and scrubbed his face until the black had all gone, when he was accaeprted and renamed "Litle Pink Sambo". Even now I can hardly believe that anyone could write such a story, and that anyone could dream of publishing it. The book must have passed through several hands before getting into print. Didn`t anybody realise how repulsive it was?
I find I`m in agreement with Peter H. The words can be removed from the AR canon with the absolute minimum of change, and should be done in fututrre editions.
