Dullsville! Come on John, you were a boy once - which would you prefer - queueing for the bathroom or splashing out in the sunshine with your friends? For me, it's no contest. Yes, the water would have been cold, but after the first shock you get used to it, and the S&A's and D's were a tough lot anyway. Open air bathing was very popular in Britain in the 1930's - the era of the 'Lido'.

I am perplexed by all the attention being given on this board to the Beckfoot plumbing arrangements. That doesn't seem to me what Ransome's story is really about.
