In the same Frank Scholarly spirit (wasn't he on Tarboard once?), and picking up the ultra-detailed mood of the day on the board (did Frank hire out the horse to Beckfoot?), may I inform Jock that (a) I need no permission to use the copyright mark - it is in the 'Symbols' folder on my PC and if anyone owns it, it is Bill Gates; (b) you cannot 'claim' copyright in the UK - you have it, whether you like it or not. You can, of course, waive it, which is what I assume that Jock is generously doing.

And now back to that gee-gee. The 'black horse'. It is inconceivable that it belonged to Beckfoot because if it did the children would have known it by its name. The Swallows would have said 'It's Blackie! (or whoever)' when they saw the carriage. As the car had been given a name, a horse would certainly have had one. The horse was hired. There were livery stables in the 1930s still at Bowness/Windermere (Rio) and Ambleside. People forget how long horse-drawn traffic lasted. In my own childhood (1940s), I can recall traps and gigs clip-clopping down our street, although larger four-wheelers were rare by then. But any livery stable would have had one for hire in 1930. The G.A. hired a driver as well - he is mentioned in SD p 165. Cost - not a great deal for a couple of hours. Horse fodder was cheap then, so it would really be for the driver's time. Wages were low. There you go.
