The twelve books have a number of references to the drinks or drinking habits of adults. Apart from the references to their own drinks, ie tea or ‘grog’ (lemonade):

SA - the Billies tell the Swallows to warn CF about interest in the contents of his houseboat as there has been talk “Down in the pub at Bigland yonder” (Chapter 13, Cape page 143) fox p 162

SA - John says to Sammy the policeman who has rowed to the island: “sorry we haven’t any beer, but there are one or two bananas left on the tree...” Even warm British beer would be better than a banana after a long row! (Chapter 24, Cape page 259) fox p 304

SA - Mr Dixon heard of the finding of CF’s stolen box in “the village last night”: (Chapter 31, Cape page 338) fox p 400

PD - One of the crew (unnamed) of the Viper was chucker-out in the ‘Ketch as Ketch can” a fisherman’s tavern (known by another name) in Lowestoft (Chapter 13, Cape page 171). He would be a tough character if he was chucker-out in a rough fisherman’s pub!

PD - Before the waterspout, they are fired on from the Viper. CF says ‘drunken scoundrels’ but PD says ‘no drunken man fired that’ (Chapter 34, Cape page 407).

WH - Mrs Blackett declines a drink of Mrs Dixon’s elderberry wine (Chapter 9, Cape page 119) Puffin page 110

WD - Daddy and the pilot have a toast of the medicinal rum (Chapter 21, Cape page 277)

WD - Daddy has a lager beer in the cafe (Chapter 23, Cape page 296)

PM - They christen Scarab with a bottle of the ginger wine that the GA had last night, “Beastly stuff” says Nancy. Did she try it? (Chapter 15, Cape page 142).

PM - Billy put his foot through the spokes of his bike on Saturday night, so he borrows Nancy’s bike (Chapter 23, Cape page 228). Going home from the pub?

PM - Slater Bob says he doesn’t mind a bottle of beer with his lunch; Nancy explains privately to Dorothea that he jolly well likes it! Timothy has one too. (Chapter 24, Cape page 241)

BS - The D&G’s fathers are on their way for their midday pints at the inn (Chapter 2, Cape page 39)

BS - Mr Tedder is going to tell the locals about the real boat-casters off when he is “up the village, come opening time” (Chapter 32, Cape page 393)

BS - The D&Gs go to the “Roaring Donkey” to see the arrival of the World’s Whopper, and have a cup of tea (Epilogue, Cape page 398-9)

ML - Nancy tries to wake the guard who is asleep with a box and pipe by his side: “Opium I expect,” said Nancy. “Smells horrible.” (Chapter 4, Cape page 72)

ML - CF says he was in police court after Boat-Race night, when Oxford won for once (Chapter 16, Cape page 212)

ML - They have a feast with the Tycoons, but do not like the “queer drink” which the pirates suck in loudly and then sleep off (Chapter 24, Cape page 296)
