No, it has been used before, but I think this is neither here nor there. Jock readily adopted the word (or rather the adjective form) is his follow-up post 28973:
Maria Turner (the GA) seems to be toffish continually
If you say that a person is 'continually toffish', then you are saying that that person is a toff, I would have thought.
no one is currently putting forward the theory on TarBoard that the Blackett household is upper class.
Well OK, but the operative word here is 'currently'. I was really thinking of the last few years on TarBoard. I recall someone (a person known to Jock) claiming on TarBoard last year that Nancy was a pillar of local society and a leading figure in the local Hunt. It has also been claimed that the Blacketts received a number of lucrative rents from local farmers. Etc etc. The accusation of ‘upper class’ (or synonyms) has definitely been made, quite often.
the introduction of the word "Toffs" is a deliberate Aunt Sally designed to score easy debating points
This allegation is unpleasant and grossly unfair. I am sorry that Jock is introducing an off-key personal note into what has been a fascinating thread conducted with fervour but also great civility.
