We always knew that your white swans were mute, and indeed they're often referred to (as Andrew does below) as "mute swans." But our black swans are not. Quoting from Wikipedia, "The Black Swan utters a musical and far reaching bugle-like sound, called either on the water or in flight, as well as a range of softer crooning notes. It can also whistle, especially when disturbed while breeding and nesting."

Looking at the photo, that black swan could be absolutely anywhere. I've always felt a bit suspicions about how Dick's photos could "prove" that the Great Northerns were nesting in the British Isles. How could such photos prove anything other than the birds were nesting somewhere?
