If you're reading to your children, nowadays that's perfectly reasonable. Sensitivities, and society, have changed for the better. But Pete exclaiming 'Niggers!' is absolutely right for him, and for that time. A corrected version loses a vital element of authenticity- and authenticity is a wonderful feature of AR's writing. But I agree; it's not right.
