Chambers gives the etymology of "Peggy" as Hypocoristic from Margaret, which led to a further search and hypocorisma "to use child-talk" and from thence "a pet-name; a diminutive or abbreviated name". Still doesn't really explain how the M became a P and the a an e. Can anyone think of another name whose pet (or hypocoristic) form is so different from the original? "Jack" from "John" seems a bit far-fatched, but at least they both begin with the same letter.
