Mike is certainly not alone. If we are going to get technical about it, AR's illustrations are line drawings, which work by suggestion. If you try and add colours, you get some very odd effects. Some of us will remember the Puffin series published in the late 1960s, the covers of which were coloured-in AR drawings. I have the Puffin Pigeon Post in front of me now. 'The First Mug of Water' is used on the cover. Susan and Titty are wearing matching pink dresses. The distant fell looks as if it has been sprayed with light blue ink up to a sharp horizontal line, then it's grey. Colouring in isn't just a sacrilege, it's a bad joke.
