In 'Busman's Honeymoon' Peter and Harriet Wimsey both smoke cigarettes. The Vicar smokes a pipe, but "will try a cigarette, just for a change" The Vicar's wife doesn't usually smoke "because of the parish, you know...one has to set an example"
Clearly the Vicar and his wife both consider cigarettes to be a little improper.
